BIOGRAPHY

After graduating from law school at Washington & Lee, John McChesney completed year-long clerkships at the Supreme Court of Virginia, with Justice A. Christian Compton, and the Virginia Court of Appeals, with Judge James Benton.  In 2002, he joined Rawls & McNelis where he has concentrated on medical malpractice defense.  His work has included suits in both state and federal court for clients including academic medical institutions and correctional health care providers.  In one recent case, he successfully defended two resident physicians in an obstetrical case.  In another, he achieved a substantial settlement on behalf of a veteran of the United States Air Force in a case involving a perforated bowel.  He has argued before federal appellate courts in both Richmond and New Orleans.  In addition, he successfully defended two Virginia judges in cases arising out of the original jurisdiction of the Virginia Supreme Court: In re: Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Roanoke, 265 Va. 313, 576 S.E.2d 458 (2003) and In re Hannett, 270 Va. 223, 619 S.E.2d 465 (2005).
